Supporting Students with Additional Learning Needs

At Island Primary, our dedicated and experienced staff strive to meet the diverse and often complex needs of all children in our care to ensure all who attend Island Primary reach their full potential through having full and equal access to the curriculum offered.

Prior to a place being offered, and to ensure that Island Primary is equipped to provide all reasonable accommodations to support the learning needs of a child with an identified SEN, the parent/guardian must submit their child’s most recent psychologist and/or specialist report(s), along with the application form. In some instances, external support may be required to assist with specific targeted therapies. In such cases, parents are responsible for sourcing and covering associated costs for however long is deemed necessary by the school.  It is important to note that a place can only be offered if this additional level of support is deemed feasible by the school, such as when considering current learning support and SEN accommodations already in place within individual classes.

  • Your child’s class teacher will take responsibility for the daily provision for your child and will be supported and advised by the school SENCo. The teacher will discuss with you any support that they think is needed, that is additional and different to what we would offer to children as part of our usual practice. The needs of your child will be clearly identified, and outcomes and targets will be set and reviewed regularly with the child, parents and professionals.

If it is identified that there is a need for a specific assessment or involvement from any outside specialist services, then our school’s SENCo will talk to you about this to arrange for additional support. Depending on the support and resources needed, your child may undertake 1:1 work, small group work or close supervision within class with an externally appointed therapist.

  • High quality teaching and adjusted plans and resources for individual students is the first step in responding to children who may have special needs. We aim to be inclusive in all areas of our curriculum, however from time-to-time children who require additional support may work on a specifically designed programme of study guided by a learning support plan (LSP) to help boost their understanding of reading, writing and number work.

In these circumstances, your child may work within a smaller group of children. These groups, also called intervention groups, may be run in or outside the classroom; by a teacher or a member of support staff who has been trained to run these groups. If needed, an external specialist from outside such as a Speech and Language Therapist may be required. If so, our SENCo will speak with you to arrange for support.

  • Island Primary has two dedicated SENCo’s on staff to assist with learning across our student body. In addition, many of our teaching staff specialise in reading intervention, delivery of phonics, maths intervention and behaviour management.

If we feel that our strategies have not met the needs of a child in our care, we will recommend the use of an external specialist.

  • Each child is assessed individually with a personalised learning support plan (LSP) which is then developed detailing any identified support and/or interventions required to meet the needs of the child.

There will be regular review meetings held between the class teacher and the SENCo where we look closely at the support/interventions that have been put in place, particularly their effectiveness and impact on the child’s learning.

Additional assessments from external services may also be required, such as Education Psychologists, to help us determine the type and extent of support and resources needed.

  • Each child is assessed independently and a Learning Support Plan will be put in place when necessary. We work with parents, pediatricians and therapists to ensure our students have the support they need.

  • Each case is assessed individually to ensure the class can accommodate one child with an aide per class. The aide will be required to meet all safeguarding requirements for volunteers and adhere to our school policies.

  • We strive to accommodate external agencies whenever possible.
